The State Institute for Drug Control (SÚKL) is responsible for:
- Human medicines – i.e. medicinal products intended for human use. SÚKL accompanies medicinal products through their entire life cycle. SÚKL is interested in medicinal products since first clinical studies, participates in the process of marketing authorization, supervises their manufacture, preparation and distribution (supply to pharmacies, for example). SÚKL also receives reports from doctors, pharmacists and patients who suspect an adverse drug reaction or have experienced problems with the quality of a medicinal product and processes all data.
- The availability of medicines – SÚKL monitors and evaluates the availability of medicinal products on the Czech market. SÚKL publishes on its website information on the availability of medicinal products, data of shortages, reasons for shortages or substitute medicines.
- Medical devices – SÚKL is committed to ensuring that only safe and efficient medical devices are used in the Czech Republic.
- Price and reimbursement regulation – SÚKL regulates the prices of medicinal products and food for special medical purposes.
- eRecept system – SÚKL ensures the operation and development of the eRecept system, which enables electronic prescription of medicinal products in the Czech Republic. Through the system eRecept doctors can issue and send prescriptions to patients electronically, for example via SMS or e-mail. Through eRecept patients also have an overview of all the medicinal products they have been prescribed. They can find the information in their medication record.
- Management and cooperation – SÚKL cooperates with the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic, international institutions and other authorities fulfilling obligations laid down by the law.
The Institute is headed by Tomáš Boráň, MD, appointed by the Minister of Health, Prof. Vlastimil Válek, MD, CSc., MBA, EBIR.
